FAA's Solar Guide
Mr. Barrett was the lead author of the "Technical Guidance for Selected Solar Technologies at Airport", commonly referred to as the FAA's Solar Guide. Published in November 2010, the Solar Guide is the seminal reference on developing solar projects on airport property to ensure airspace safety and ensure compatibility with the long-term operation of the airport business.
Airport Renewable Energy Projects Inventory
Mr Barrett was the Principal Investigator for "Airport Renewable Energy Projects Inventory and Case Examples" published in the summer of 2020. Funded by the FAA and administered by the Airport Cooperative Research Program, the report presents a comprehensive status of the development of renewable energy projects at airports.
Moi International Airport Carbon Emissions Reduction Project
Mr. Barrett served as the Technical Advisor to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a special agency of the United Nations, overseeing the procurement, construction, and inauguration of three carbon emission reduction projects at airports. One of the projects, sited at Moi International Airport in Mombasa Kenya, included 500 kWp of solar photovoltaic electricity generation, lithium-ion battery storage, and mobile ground power and pre-conditioned air units allowing aircraft to stop running their engines while parked at the gate and received power and air conditioning from solar power.
Renewable Energy and Aviation
Mr. Barrett was the lead author of three guidance on low carbon emission reduction project development and financing for global airports under contract with the International Civil Aviation Organization. The report provides support to civil aviation authorities around the world on how to implement solar and other low emission projects.
